Soundscape.

"Grandma, grandma sick in bed
called the doctor and the doctor said.
Get up grandma, you aint sick
All you need is a hickory stick.

I can’t remember where I came across this verse, but when I was much younger I was a music composer and I used this in a track which became reused as a sample. Something about it felt perfect for the project. And then I found this in my research.
“However, I believe that this 19th century or older verse shows how slave masters treated older enslaved people who were ill {and, by extension, any enslaved person who was ill}. Their illnesses would be discounted and if the sick person didn't get up from bed, they'd be beaten by a hickory stick."

My development of the soundscape consists of cultural archival sources, my recorded voice describing my experiences of pain, illness, the medical community and also my re-imagined narrative of my life; remixed and overlaid with music and sound. I use Logic Pro for producing & a zoom mic for recording my voice.
